To many when they think of the isles of Scilly they think of the fantastic bird life that can be found and especially the autumn the rarities that turn up, and it is true that they can provide some exciting opportunities in bird photography, but there is far more to these stunning isles than just the birds. When it comes to landscape photographic opportunities there are so many varied environments that the enthusiast could spend months there and not manage to photograph every vista. From the barren heath land areas of St Martin's to the stunning beach and seascapes of St Mary's the world famous gardens of Tresco or the rocky out crops of the eastern isles, there is something to suit everyone's style. Special mention has to go to Camel rock, and natural formation in rock of, yes, you guessed it, a camel!

If macro work is more your style, then the abbey gardens of Tresco are a must, with some very exotic plants for the UK easily found. Or if you are visiting at the right time the almost endless fields of bulbs can offer stunning chances to capture some unique images.

For those interested in more fast paced pursuits, then these isles offer a number of exciting opportunities, from the world Pilot Gig racing championships (large rowing boats) to kite surfing or horseback riding. Or the more adventurous (and those with the right equipment) could attempt underwater photography with the diving safaris that are available.

Architectural photographers are also catered for, with large numbers of old buildings or the many ancient burial sites dotted around the islands, but there are also some contemporary gems hidden around the place.

But let us not forget the wildlife, with many species of birds offering the possibility of turning up, they really can provide some exciting times, and if not the Song thrushes are possibly the most confiding bird anywhere in the UK (often wandering up and sitting within inches of you). But it is not all birds, seals and dolphins can be seen around the coastline, and a lucky few may find the unique Scilly Shrew.

Of course it isn't all photography, there are many other artists who work on or visit the isles, and the nights can be filled with some very pleasant evenings in the many excellent pubs or restaurants. And young families will love the miles of golden sand (there are times when you would believe you were on some far flung exotic island).
