Azerbaijan - a miraculous country with its rich natural resources, mysterious nature and ancient culture, history and people; whose lifestyle presents a unique and harmonious combination of the traditions and ceremonies of many different cultures and civilizations. Since ancient times its favorable geographical position and rich nature served as the reason of transformation of this zone in a wide place of dwelling. Historically playing a role of the " Gold Bridge" between the West and the East, the North and the South, Azerbaijan with its natural conditions favorable for a life during the various historical periods attracted many people, tribes, nationalities (national characters) onto this territory. It also served as bait for aggressive moves of various tribes and empires like Roman and Parthian, Arab Caliphate, Great Horde of Chenguiz Khan, empires of Tamerlan, Ottoman Turks and Russia.

Photography first came to Azerbaijan in early 1870's. The first photographs in Azerbaijan State Archives are dated to the year 1870. Photography was popular in Azerbaijan during the Soviet times and became much more popular during the last decade with the introduction and growth of digital photography.

For those who are interested in historical and architectural photography, Baku's Old Town “Icheri sheher” (12th century), Shirvan dynasty palace (15th century), the minaret of Synykh -Gala (11th century), Maiden Tower (7-12th centuries), “Baiil Stones” (13th century) along with many other places offer great opportunities for this type of photography.

The combination of Baku’s ancient and modern streets can be a pleasant place for urban and street photography, with many charatcerful faces to be found in the crowds.

A wide variety of choices awaits those who are interested in wildlife photography in Azerbaijan. The Caucasus Mountains harbor spectacular peaks and glacial lakes along with forested valleys and stream-side meadows in the midst of marvelous gorges and caves. Do not forget also to visit Gobustan — a place with prehistoric rock drawings - petroglyphs - an art "archive" of the human evolution on Earth.
