Photography on Christmas Island

Christmas Island and its incomparable landscape is a nature photographer’s paradise.

Filled with an abundance of photographic opportunities including friendly indigenous locals, colourful buddhist temples, incredible scenery and stunning wildlife, Christmas Island provides multi-faceted opportunities for days on location.

The island is famous for its Red Crab migration and the Red Crabs themselves are very cooperative subjects. Christmas Island is also home to the largest intact population of Coconut Crabs in the world.

During different times of the year, it is possible to get up close and personal with nesting Red Boobies, Brown Boobies and the incredibly beautiful Golden-morph White Tailed Tropicbird, affectionately known by locals as Golden Bosunbirds, that circle the island like giant, oversized Canaries.

There are aspects of Christmas Island that are similar to other islands in the world and just when you think you are in somewhere familiar, you can go on a walk down into the canyon in the Dales and it’s like nothing you have ever seen on earth. Vines cling to sharp-edged cliffs, water cascades down from springs and the bottom of the canyon is only accessible on low tide.

Visiting Christmas Island is truly a “Middle Earth” experience!

Wildlife photographer Inger Vandyke lists Christmas Island as one of her ‘must see’ island destinations. To see her images from the island, please see her website www.ingervandyke.com .
