For the nature photographer, British Columbia is considered something of a mecca. Most of the province is mountainous and this, coupled with its coastal geography, makes for some of the most spectacular vistas in the world.

One of the great things about travelling in BC is the large network of provincial parks which are managed by the provincial government. These offer the newcomer a perfect opportunity to venture into the semi-wilds of this mostly untamed corner of Canada.

For the wildlife enthusiast there is much to look out for. Bears sightings are a relatively common occurrence, to the point where locals are particularly 'bear-aware' when camping out. Deer, elk, moose and caribou are also to be found, as well as an array of birds of prey. Whale-watching is also a popular excursion for the visitor, with sightings almost guaranteed by tour operators.

It is a little known fact that British Columbia produces some of the best wines in North America, including a number of much sought after ice wines. Oenophiles should definitely put the Okanagan Valley on their itinerary, home to numerous great vineyards.

For those who prefer to stay close to the city, Vancouver has much to offer. Situated on the Burrard Peninsula, there's many places that offer views of the water and the North Shore mountains beyond. The city is regularly listed as one of the most liveable cities in the world, and locals delight in pointing out that it is one of the few cities where you can golf in the morning and ski in the afternoon! Photography is a very popular pastime in Vancouver, so don't be surprised at the number of people you'll see out on a sunny day toting high-end equipment. Some popular locations include English Bay and Stanley Park (bigger than New York's Central Park), Jericho Beach, Gastown for those seeking some Heritage, and nearby East Hastings Street, the city's gritty underbelly.
